HIP EncodingThis is a featured page

HIP encoding is a way of encoding Slavonic texts, with accent marks, superscript letters and all. I don't know what HIP stands for. The technical description is available in Russian at http://www.orthlib.ru/hip/ and http://www.pechatnyj-dvor.su/docs/hip-9.html.

HIP is not compatible with Unicode, which supposedly has a character for every writing system in the world. I find this somehow appropriate, that since the Old Believers are standing up to the New World Order that their language also can't be represented by a system which can record every other language in the world.

There are many Slavonic texts encoded with HIP, some of which are available at: http://www.orthlib.ru/hip/refs.html.

There are two ways of displaying texts encoded with HIP. First, using a Linux typesetting program called Latex, and the HIP addons, which are hiptex, available at http://str12.sobor.org/hip/ or csltex, available at http://csltex.googlepages.com/. Second, on a Windows system, using a font which is designed to work with HIP, available from http://www.irmologion.ru/fonts.html.

The output is quite impressive - see http://csltex.googlepages.com/sample2.pdf for an example.

The output example in the PDF does not appear exactly like the Old Slavonic manuscripts I have seen. There are long tails on some letters, etc. The strict Old Believers would never approve of using such things as an electronic medium for creating their sacred texts. I know that some people have succeeded in creating a close example of Old Slavonic, their work is different than what I see here. I am not sure how these other people created their files, but it goes without saying they used electronics. For some people electronics is not sin, but I think it is clear how God looks on such things. He wrote the ten commandments with His finger, Christ wrote in the ground. I see the examples I wish to follow. All the work I have done online will become a waste, but a few understand and are abandoning electronics.
